Abstract | One of a series of publications which provides information about the geography of the Netherlands to institutions and persons outside the Netherlands, this publication discusses the geography of and land use in South Limburg, a region in the southeastern part of the Netherlands. There are four sections. The first provides a history and describes the region. South Limburg has three special features. It is the only part of the Netherlands where part of the land is more than 200 metres above sea level, the only region where economic development has resulted mainly from mineral extraction, and it is international in character. Discussed are the origin of the landscape, mineral extraction, agriculture, coal mining and restructuring, boundaries, and excursion routes. Statistical data on land use, demography, the economy, agriculture, mineral extraction, manufacturing, and trade are dealt with in the second section. The third section contains brief notes on traffic, civil engineering work, and physical planning. The concluding section describes the aims and activities of the Information and Documentation Center for the Geography of the Netherlands. The appendices contain a bibliography and an index to topographical maps. (RM) |
