AbstractThis paper examines changing family patterns in Australia over the last twenty-five years, and proposed or actual legislative changes which have occurred in this area. Statistics are presented which reflect the changing nature and structures of Australian families for the following categories: married families; one-parent families; de- facto (informal marriage) families; births; adoptions; stepchildren and stepfamilies; children in foster families; and artificial insemination by donor (AID) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) families. A summary of legislative changes in Australia over the past twenty-five years is presented for these topics: marriage and divorce; the status and rights of ex-nuptial children and their parents; adoption (issues highlighted in this category include access to birth records, consents required for adoption, and guardianship as a legal alternative to adoption); stepfamilies; children in long-term foster families; and families with AID and IVF children.
