Abstract	Reasons for slipping academic standards in U.S. community colleges and a specific program combating this problem are discussed. Two reasons are offered for this slippage; the first has to do with the ambiguous state of the community college faculty. These teachers are said to have difficulty defining their roles because they feel a powerlessness in dealing with the college administration and in having to lower their standards for instruction and grading in dealing with their students. The second major reason for slippage given is the past and present trend toward student consumerism. The current reality of teachers having to resort to advertising for classes and schools having to advertise for easy programs is seen as having a detrimental effect on the attitudes of students and teachers. The vocational education emphasis that the community college has taken is traced, and arguments are offered for and against it. A program, established in two Florida community colleges, that has effectively raised academic standards is briefly described. (JM)
