Abstract | This competency-based curriculum for prevocational exploration in West Virginia provides experiences at grades 9 and 10 related to exploring careers and educational programs for those careers. The guidance units are designed to assist the counselor in providing activities that relate to ongoing hands-on activities in prevocational business, environmental, industrial, and service exploration laboratories. The curriculum is organized into two sections and divided into 24 units covering the following topics: Dictionary of Occupational Titles; personal characteristics inventory; job interviews; driver's license and Social Security applications; resumes; employment applications; job openings; occupational choices; vocational and educational choices; occupational choices and personal satisfaction; non-verbal communication; written and oral communication skills; career options as related to lifestyles; education for chosen occupations; components of a career; goals; personality and values; aptitude and interests; information sources about occupations; type of work activities; interpersonal relations; working conditions and physical demands; and decision making. Each unit contains a task, a competency, suggested resources, notes to the teacher, learning objectives, evaluation procedures, information sheets, and work sheets. (KC) |
