Abstract	Fourth in a series of six dealing with African culture and intended for secondary level students, this book deals with the major effects of European colonialism on African life as seen by Africans. All of the selections in this volume were written by Africans and come from a variety of sources including autobiographies, novels, poems, newspaper articles, and historical documents. The basic purpose of the book is to capture some of the feelings, aspirations, and experiences of black Africans and, by so doing, help the reader develop a sense of empathy and a feeling of identity with human beings everywhere, recognizing the common humanity that all men share. Discussion questions are provided for the selections. The selections in this volume examine the social, political, economic, and cultural conflicts that resulted from foreign control. The period under consideration runs from approximately 1885 to the end of World War II. The reading selections are varied. Some examples follow. The first selection tells how one African chief reacted to seeing a white man for the first time. In two selections, Henry Stanley, the famous American journalist and explorer, explains how he was welcomed by Africans while exploring the Congo River in the early 1870's and then the African chief Mojimba, who led the welcoming party for Stanley, describes how he perceived the encounter. Chief Kabongo of the Kikuyu tribe of Kenya describes what happened to his people when the Europeans took control of Kikuyu land in another selection. (Author/RM)
