Abstract | Described is the Social Studies component of the Iowa Developed Energy Activity Sampler (IDEAS), a multidisciplinary energy education program designed for infusion into the curriculum of grades seven through twelve. Aspects of the energy situation addressed in these lessons include resource finiteness, exponential growth, standard of living, foreign relations, historical perspectives, and future alternatives. Also contained in the IDEAS program are activity sets for Home Economics (SE 034 678), Industrial Arts (SE 034 679), Language Arts (SE 034 680), Mathematics (SE 034 681), and Science (SE 034 682). Provided in this manual are the 30 student-centered activities from the complete IDEAS curriculum that relate to secondary social studies. Illustrated by drawings, charts, or diagrams, the lesson plans include discussion questions and background information. Activities are arranged under six concepts: (1) Energy is basic; (2) Energy usefulness is limited; (3) The environment is affected by energy exchanges; (4) Energy choices affect society; (5) Conservation; and (6) The future is ours to shape and share.
