AbstractResults of the 1980 survey of policy and practice in the employment of college and university graduates in business and industry are presented. A total of 142 companies responded to the inquiry, all but a few of which are large or medium-sized corporations. Reports came from 20 states and Washington, D.C. The variety of business interests represented by the responding companies are identified. Information is provided on their views of the business outlook for 1981, needs for college graduates from 1981 classes, the employment of inexperienced college graduates during 1980 and the number who will be employed in 1981, college graduates to be hired at various salary levels (for bachelor's graduates and master's graduates), earnings of graduates after five years, and the effect of the recession on college recruiting. Suggestions that would make college graduates more employable in the company were also offered by responding companies. Findings include the following: 39 percent of respondents indicated that business would be better for their compnay in 1981, while 11 percent predicted that business would not be as good; the companies expect to hire 16 percent more bachelor's level and 10 percent more master's level graduates; the companies will raise starting salaries from 7 to 10 percent. The greatest demand will be for graduates in engineering, accounting, business administration, computer science, and sales. (SW)
