| Abstract | This article describes the Washington International School, its history, curriculum, support services, and the International Baccalaureate program which is followed in the secondary level. The lower school is bilingual in its methodology. Students pursue their studies both in English and in their other "working language." In the secondary school, a pattern for language study modeled on that of the International Baccalaureate is followed. The emphasis throughout the program is on international and humanistic education. The latter part of the article outlines a series of practical steps for communities to follow in setting up an international high school, or at least increasing the quantity and quality of foreign language instruction in their schools. In addition to this question, other areas of interest that are addressed are the following: (1) up grading language requirements in M.A. and Ph. D. programs; (2) government involvement at all levels; and (3) the role of the scholar. (AMH) |
