| Abstract | This study compared attitudes of directors of nursing in Tennessee toward collective bargaining as related to their membership status in the American Nurses' Association. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) directors of nursing do not approve of collective bargaining in hospitals, (2) directors of nursing prefer to negotiate with the professional organization rather than a labor union, and (3) directors of nursing are in a state of conflict with hospital administration over membership in the professional organization. Questionnaires were sent to all directors of nursing in the state (189); a total of 129 (68.2 percent) usable replies were received, with participants expressing apprehension over participation in the study and strong desire for anonymity. After responses were tabulated and analyzed by computer, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) there is no significant difference in attitudes of directors of nursing toward collective bargaining based on membership or non-membership in the American Nurses' Association; (2) directors of nursing show a strong negative attitude toward negotiation with the professional nurses' organization, and (3) directors of nursing indicate a moderately strong agreement that conflict exists between themselves and hospital administration within the non-member group and a much weaker response within the member group.
