AbstractBased upon a review of Connecticut State Labor Department studies, community college enrollment and graduate statistics, and the State Master Plan for Vocational Education, this two-part report examines the vocational education needs within Connecticut and assesses the degree to which the state's community colleges are meeting those needs. After introductory material describing the study design, Part I examines the characteristics and educational objectives of students entering the community colleges in 1979, in terms of their sex, age, reasons for attending a community college, full-/part-time status, and program enrollment. In addition, this section presents the findings of a follow-up survey of 1978-79 graduates, which focused on their employment status, relevance of their job to their major, usefulness of their program of study, and their attitudes toward college services and environments appropriate to vocational education. Part II deals with the statistics which compare average annual employment needs for a labor market area with the number of graduate degrees awarded in individual programs of community colleges serving that area. Finally, recommendations for curriculum considerations are offered based on employment trends revealed in the study. Data tables and a bibliography are included. (JP)
