Abstract | This review is presented as a response to major questions related to school and public library cooperation. Its specific objectives are to: (1) indicate the present status of cooperation between school and public libraries; (2) present a historical perspective within which to evaluate the progress of current efforts; (3) identify future trends and directions; (4) point out barriers to cooperation and factors leading to its success; (5) suggest outstanding sources which contain relevant insights about school/public library cooperation; and (6) identify some representative cooperative activities. As a structural framework, several functional categories are identified for the literature; in addition, a distinction is made between research-based and non-research-based documents. Major areas treated in the non-research-based literature include history, legal bases for school/public library cooperation, cooperative techniques, factors leading to success, barriers, and trends in school/public library cooperation. Research-oriented studies of cooperation between school and public libraries, conducted on a more limited basis, are discussed in the categories of combined school/public libraries and less formal cooperative activities between school and public libraries. An extensive bibliography concludes the review. (SW) |
