Abstract | An investigation conducted at Suffolk University as a basis for developing a course in career and life planning is described, and the course units that were produced are outlined. The literature survey investigated: the historical development of career and life planning from Frank Parson (1909) to the present; kindergarten to adult programs; and programs in schools, public sectors, professional career counseling firms, and colleges and universities. Interviews with college officials at Suffolk University and with placement directors at other institutions offering such a course were also conducted. Three major course units which were developed are as follows: "knowing oneself or self-awareness,""the world of work," and "the marketing campaign." The rationale, objectives, and learning activities of these course units are described. Since the university presently offers an appropriate course for freshmen, it was recommended that a pass-fail three credit hour course be provided for seniors to help students choose a career. The experiential approach used for the course could be described as a structured, goal oriented T-group type of group counseling. Prescreening of students to aid assignment to groups and other aspects of the course are described. References are included. (SW) |
