| Abstract | Differences in perceptions and values between Americans and Iranians are described with reference to the following cultural categories: country images, self images, family, marriage, love and sex, friendship, society, government and politics, and freedom. Within each category, comparisons are based on an analysis of the differing cultural connotations of specific English words and their closest Farsi equivalent. For example, words discussed under "friendship" include friends, enemy, trust, fidelity, brotherhood, help, respect, and honesty. To highlight American-Iranian similarities and differences, in addition to prose narratives, the salient components of perceptions are shown in comparative graphical presentations. General trends reflecting important motivational priorities and culturally characteristic value orientations are further discussed in each chapter summary. The summaries focus on differential psychocultural dispositions that can affect interpersonal relations, rapport, and effective communication between Americans and Iranians. The rationale and use of the lexicon are discussed at length. (Author/JB) |
