AbstractThis document provides teaching guidelines and student material for a unit intended for use in an eighth grade mathematics or consumer program. Time allotment is from four to five hours of classroom time. The objective of this capsule is to teach the basic concepts of banking, including how a bank makes money for its customers, services which a bank offers, the role of the FDIC in protecting customer's deposits, and federal and state banking laws. The document introduces banking as one of many types of businesses and discusses the services a bank can offer, including savings accounts, checking accounts, loans, safety deposit boxes, investment advice, and trusts. Nine learning activities ask the students to complete sentences, do a puzzle, compare banks through various methods, draw cartoons, collect newspaper ads, investigate the Yellow Pages of the telephone book, view a filmstrip, design an ad, and do research. Four supplementary activities suggest that the student investigate career opportunities in banking, investigate checking accounts, explore the history of banking, and learn more about the Federal Reserve System. The teacher's guide provides advance preparation information, a list of resources, keys to activities and tests, a bibliography, and copies of all worksheets and assessments. (CK)
