| Abstract | The point of view is presented that evaluation projects can be enriched by not using either an exclusively quantitative model or an exclusively qualitative model but by combining both models in one project. The concept of metaphor is used to clarify the usefulness of the combination. Iconic or holistic metaphors describe an object or event as unique, whereas analogic or comparative metaphors emphasize the relational or common attributes of objects or events. The most powerful evaluations recognize the potential of both a situation's uniqueness and its universality. This paper focuses attention on the blending of the interpretations that emerged from different types of data, identifying a wider range of potential elaborations than would have been possible using either type of data, or metaphor, alone. The evaluation of the Special and General Education Leadership Project (SAGE) is used as an example. In this evaluation project the first two years depended on a quantitative approach; but, due to a change in leadership, the third year of the project added a qualitative, anthropological, point of view to the data collection.
