AbstractThe proceedings of a conference on Asian Americans held in New York City in May 1978 are summarized in this report. The conference consisted of workshops on four issues: employment, voter participation, youth, and the elderly. In the workshop on employment, issues discussed included the participation of Asians in the health system and in the public (Federal, State and local) sector. In the workshop on voter participation, discussion centered around problems of voter registration, voter education, and redistricting as they affect Asian Americans in New York City. Also considered were ways that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 can be used to increase the participation of Asian Americans with limited English speaking ability. Principle issues covered in the workshop on youth were the lack of statistics on Asian American young people, language and educational problems, youth programs and employment, and gangs and violence, particularly in New York City's Chinatown. In the workshop on the elderly Asian American population of New York City, the availability of census statistics, language and cultural problems, social isolation, health, limited income, and housing were among the areas discussed. For each workshop, relevant statistical information is presented. Recommendations of the conference participants for eliminating discrimination and inequalities are also given. (GC)
