Abstract | Written from the Indian's point of view, these resource materials for primary grade social studies curriculum tell the story of the Suquamish Indians and their most important leader, Chief Sealth (after whom the city of Seattle was named). Focusing on the life of the Suquamish in the 1800's, the narrative text and full page line drawings in the student booklet describe where the tribe lived, what they ate, what they believed about the world around them and their relation to it, and what happened to the Suquamish after the arrival of the first European explorers (the settlement of whites on the land and the displacement of Indians to the reservation). The accompanying teacher's guide includes learning objectives (points that the student will be able to state in writing or discussion), suggestions for reading the student book, discussion questions, suggested activities, supplementary notes, and additional resources for the classroom.
