Abstract | This conversational English-Alutiiq dictionary is intended to be used as a guide to those words actively used in Alutiiq and their conversational equivalents. The Alutiiq language, formerly referred to as Sugpiaq, Suk Eskimo, Chugach Eskimo and Pacific Gulf Yupik, is not the language of the people of the Aleutian Chain but rather a dialect spoken on the Kenai Peninsula. In addition to a brief history of the development of the language, the dictionary includes an introduction to the alphabet which employs the same graphic symbols as English but with some differences in the sound/symbol correspondences. A brief discussion of the distinctive phonological features of Alutiiq provides most of the information needed to become a fluent reader of Alutiiq. A general overview of the more important morphological and syntactic aspects of Alutiiq can be gleaned from the introduction while additional grammatical information is provided by the subglosses throughout. The major portion of the dictionary lists the lexical items alphabetically in English and gives their contextualized, conversational Alutiiq equivalents. (PMJ) |
