Abstract	Phase III of a five-phase project which has implications for the improvement of instructional programs in Mississippi's elementary and secondary schools is described. In phase III, specifically stated objectives or competencies in physical education, designed to accomplish the objectives stated in phase II, are cataloged. The competencies are divided into ten areas each area containing the competencies expected of students: basic movement skills (grades 1-6); rhythms (grades 1-6); perceptual motor skills (grades 1-6); physical fitness (grades 1-12); game and sports skills (grades 1-12); gymnastics (grades 1-12); aquatics (grades 1-12); rhythms (grades 7-12); individual and dual sports (grades 7-12); and team sports (grades 7-12). A number of specific objectives and sub-objectives are listed for each of the ten areas. The development of these competency lists is also briefly described. (Author/MH)
