| Abstract | Designed for the practitioner concerned with motivating students to read, the 28 articles in this book are arranged in four sections. The articles in the first section, "Methodology," deal with how to motivate students to read. Among the topics covered in this section are the newspaper as a tool for teaching reading, comic books as motivators, using Newbery Award winning books to motivate students, ways to motivate the disadvantaged high school student, and ways to motivate the farm child. Articles in the second section, "Interests," cover ways of learning students' interests and using this knowledge as a motivating force. Specific topics discussed include ways of assessing attitudes toward reading, survival reading, and reading for special purposes. Articles appearing in the third section, "Programs," contain descriptions of reading programs that are widely used and that represent approaches to motivating students to read through a central theme or thrust. Programs described employ television script reading, telephone interviews with authors, a picture gallery, paperback books, and student written books. Articles in the final section, "Nonprint," offer suggestions for the use of nonprint media as motivation devices. Ideas include the use of homemade filmstrips, teacher-made and commercial games, and some alternatives to standard book reports. (FL) |
