| Abstract | The need for provision of recreation services to the homebound aging has been recognized by many senior center organizers and directors. Because the attitudes and actions of both individuals and organizations are strongly affected by the social and cultural environment of their past, a history of both recreation and home-delivered services to the elderly is examined. Although neigher of these two areas has been studies definitively, existing data is presented. Secondary material draws from the literature examples establishing the need for such programs through study of the characteristics of the homebound aging, the benefits of recreation, and a rationale for coordinated service delivery. Because a survey of recreational services for the elderly shows little success in meeting homebound needs, and home-delivered services offer little in the area of recreation, there is a need for programs in this area.
