AbstractBasic education data for fall 1977 on all free public elementary and secondary day schools in the United States, the District of Columbia, and some outlying areas under U.S. jurisdiction are presented in this report. National trend data since fall 1973 on selected items of information are included. Basic data for each state or other area include numbers of local school districts, staff, and pupils in fall 1977 and, for the 1977-78 school year, estimated revenue and nonrevenue receipts and school expenditures (including average salaries paid to classroom teachers and other professional/educational staff). Data on the numbers of public elementary and secondary day schools and high school graduates for school year 1976-77 are also provided. Most of these same data items are also shown for the 20 cities that ranked highest in total population in the 1970 census. Descriptions of survey procedure, other methodology, and coverage appear in Appendix A. A replica of the report form, with totals entered for the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and instructions to respondents are shown in Appendix B. (Author)
