AbstractThe aim of this study was to determine the perceptions of school superintendents in Mississippi toward the role of principals as members of the management team. The Team Management Opinionaire (TMO), a 12-item instrument designed by the researchers for the project, was sent to the 152 school superintendents in the state. Usable returns were received from 70 percent of the superintendents. The mean scores on each item and the total score of the TMO were compared by type of school district and related to district enrollment, degree level of the superintendent, age of the superintendent, and number of professional administrative and supervisory personnel in the district central office. Analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis were used in the statistical analyses. The school superintendents as a group are in agreement with the role of the principal in team management. The respondents indicated moderate to strong agreement on nine of the twelve items on the instrument. Slight agreement was indicated on the items that stated that principals should be represented on the districtwide collective bargaining management teams, and that principals should review and provide input concerning development of the school district budget. The group manifested slight disagreement with the proposition that principals should be represented on screening teams for screening applicants for districtwide administrative positions. (Author/MLF)
