AbstractA number of colleges and universities are providing greater access to higher education by developing off-campus programs and courses. A study of such off-campus activities offered for credit in the Middle States area draws on data from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools) survey and on information from interviews with administrators. Focus is on those educational activities that necessitate a student's matriculating eventually at the main campus to secure a degree. Included in the data summarized is information on enrollment, student characteristics, the likelihood of student transfers to the main campus, curriculum offerings, policies concerning the determination of curriculum, faculty selection criteria, faculty situation (regular full-time, non-regular, etc.), program administration, administrative autonomy, and resources, including libraries, computers, counseling, etc. Also presented are a few recommendations about the administration of off-campus units, transfer of students to the main campus, curriculum planning, the advisability of selecting as many full-time main campus faculty as possible, adequate planning for off-campus units, and realistic appreciation of library needs.
