| Abstract | This literature review explores research that has been done on prose comprehension and retention. The first section discusses investigations of factors that affect the amount of recall, including instructionally relevant experiments, research using additional context as external aids, and investigations that test the generalizability of verbal learning results to connected discourse. The second section discusses representation of text structures, including representations of logical relations, representations concerned with more complex relations, formal models of text structure, and story grammars. A third section discusses the use of world knowledge to aid comprehension, including schemata, frames, and prototypes; necessary inferences; scripts, plans, and goals; the script-elaboration model; and experimental evidence in support of the elaboration theory. The paper closes with general conclusions and implications for education. (TJ) |
