Abstract | A descriptive model of the Fire Education Resources Information System (FERIS) is examined in this document. Information regarding educational materials relating to fire prevention, protection, and suppression is discussed. A description of the model is presented in two sections. Section 1, Problem Definition, surveys the background and needs for such a system, research methodology, user communities, services and products, objectives and performance criteria, and staffing recommendations. Section 2, System Design, presents the model itself. It contains information on normal system operations, access distribution, search/organization, system interaction flow, input, central file structure, output, media campaign, equipment recommendations, growth of the system, cost estimates, and the FERIS task-planning schedule. A bibliography follows this section. Appendixes include the frequency distribution of survey responses and the comparative analysis of machine-aided indexes, which include examples from the following systems: Library of Congress; "Books in Print"; Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC); Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE); and the National Information Center for Education Media (NICEM).
