AbstractIn a nontechnical way, this small book outlines the present use of energy in schools, what forms of energy will be available in the foreseeable future, how energy is presently wasted in educational facilities, and how energy can be conserved now and in the future. The school administrator can control the energy consumption in his schools and this consumption can be reduced by a large amount if the principle of time/space control of the heating and air conditioning system is understood. The major factor in energy consumption in any school building is the occupancy pattern of the building. To conserve energy in school facilities, survey structural points through which energy may be escaping, and install appropriate insulation; evaluate the efficiency of even recently installed central HVAC systems; and, above all, establish the occupancy pattern of the building in order to implement selective control. In building or remodeling, the selection of a heating and cooling system with its controls is the most important factor in conserving energy. The six determinants that will produce the most efficient system are (1) modular systems, (2) natural air cooling, (3) air-to-air heat pumps, (4) heat recovery, (5) solar panels, and (6) an automatic central control system.
