Abstract | This paper oriented for new researchers entering the field of CAI research discusses the research experience in this area, outlines some of the important computer requirements of CAI research, and proposes a conservative computer development strategy to meet those requirements. The development of PLATO and TICCIT are described as examples of the preoccupation of early research with the problems of the delivery vehicle--the computer--rather than with the problems of instruction. In considering systems for research in the instructional area, it is suggested that a general-purpose system with manufacturer provided hardware and software may be more appropriate than special-purpose systems because of the need for flexibility and generality in addressing the diversity of instructional issues that remain unresolved. User initiated systems development is a high risk venture that historically has proved to be fraught with opportunities for failure. Ways in which CAI/CMI research requirements can be met with commercially available standard systems are examined, with emphasis on those research requirements that are generally most difficult to satisfy. The passive role of CMI as a management tool to collect, manage, analyze, retrieve, and display student performance data is explained, and factors to be considered in selecting a computer system for CAI research are discussed.
