AbstractA survey of the 29 Michigan community colleges was conducted in regard to the services each provided to older Americans. The survey data indicated that two fundamental strategies exist for serving the older population: an integrated effort whereby the objective is the inclusion of older adults in existing services; or specific programmatic efforts directed to the older population. The majority of colleges used both these strategies based on factors such as interagency cooperative efforts, funding sources, and staffing patterns. An overview of the findings revealed: 20 colleges had course offerings designed for the older population; 11 had gerontology courses; one had a degree/certificate program in aging; 18 had workshops/conferences in aging; 14 had service projects/programs in aging; and 26 had special admission, tuition, or registration policies for the older population. The findings reveal a desire for leisure time and personal enrichment services and courses. Survey responses of the individual colleges are presented to outline program objectives and offerings, cooperative relations with other agencies in the field of aging, future directions, and contact persons. Appendices describe courses and selected projects in aging. (MB)
