| Abstract | Student personnel professionals have long recognized and worked with the unique nature of student alcohol abuse problems on the college campus. Some abuses often observed are excessive consumption, use of alcohol as a means of socialization, strong peer pressure on others to drink, loud boisterous behavior, occasional disruptions and damage, and, on some occasions, harassment, intimidation, and physical conflict with other people. Most youthful drinkers quickly develop moderate, controlled drinking behavior patterns and do not encounter serious problems with alcohol abuse. But the minority who cannot maintain self-control or who become dependent on alcohol create severe problems for themselves and for others who must deal with them in group social activities and residence group living situations. These people, and the constant influx of new students to our campuses each year, generate a never-ending challenge for student personnel professionals and students. We now recognize that the number of regular drinkers among the college-age population is increasing and that many students do develop serious, long-range alcohol abuse problems. This publication will provide a model; offer applicable easily utilized strategies for staff and students; and identify readily available low cost resources. (Author) |
