| Abstract | The objective of this paper is to describe the procedures and results of a board of education using a community committee in the selection of a new superintendent. The use of a committee in this role is unusual, given the board's legal responsibility and the significance of the task. An analysis of the procedures and results indicates that the committee's ratings of applicants was not significantly different from that of the board and that traditional criteria weighed heavily in the selection. They also indicate that there were definite benefits in terms of legitimatizing the selection and generating support for the board in the community. (Author) |
