Abstract | This report contains an explanation of the Wisconsin laws relating to school truancy; a review of truancy statistics, procedures, and penalties in selected Wisconsin school districts; and a sampling of alternative programs and procedures from other states to deal with truant pupils. Effective procedures for dealing with truant pupils and effective educational programs that discourage truancy are discussed. Reference is also made to a survey of 59 school districts selected from various parts of the state by size and urban-rural status. District administrators were questioned about numbers of truant pupils, procedures for dealing with truants, and the impact of truancy on the school district. A list of the school districts surveyed and a copy of the questionnaire are contained in the appendix. (Author/MLF) |
