| Abstract | This study examines the differences between staff personnel and adjudicated delinquents at an Ohio Youth Commission (OYC) facility on the Continuum of Criminal Offenses instrument, Juvenile Version (CCOJV). The CCOJV (Klein, 1975) measures perceptions of seriousness of criminal offenses and how raters would handle offenders. Subjects were high school students who were adjudicated delinquents committed to a facility, and staff members of the same facility. Results indicate significant differences between the staff at OYC and the high school students in the areas of total score, assault category, and sexual offenses class. Findings further indicate the existence of a continuum of seriousness of criminal offense categories ranging from the least serious (public order crimes) to the most serious (sexual offenses). This continuum is upheld for all groups investigated (staff, all students, first-time commitments, and second- and more-time commitments). The only exceptions to this are tested differences between status crime and public order offenses within the second- and more-time commitment group. A number of student treatment strategies are examined. Since staff rated criminal offense descriptions more seriously than students, it is suggested that they might be used effectively as role-models. (Author/JLL) |
