| Abstract | Ability to reason clearly and efficiently is perhaps the single most important learning objective common to all subjects and to all aspects of the schooling situation. In order to design an effective reading comprehension program, teachers and program planners must assess children's logical abilities. This discussion provides a review of some of the literature concerning logical thinking and outlines several reasoning patterns: causality, negation, conditionality, and so on. Implications for the reading teacher suggest that decisions regarding teaching and measuring be made on the basis of workability and not on assumptions of reasoning ability, that decisions concerning instructional approaches and materials selection be based on a solid understanding of the reasoning tasks required in stories and exercises, and that formal reasoning-skills instruction take place.
