Abstract	According to the authors, parents have lost control not only over how and what their children are taught but over how they are treated as persons in schools they are required to attend. To counter parents' feelings of powerlessness in confronting educational problems, the authors urge parents to organize, get involved in school politics, and stand up for their rights. This volume is a how-to-do-it handbook for parents who want to increase their participation in all areas of public schooling. The first section, "How to Get Your Parent Group Off Its Duff," covers fund-raising, "how to wake up the PTA," and how to use the press and improve public relations. Part II examines how parents can respond to school problems (such as busing and student discipline), how they can deal effectively with school bureaucrats, how to evaluate schools and school personnel, and how parents can cope with collective bargaining and teacher strikes. This section also covers alternative public schools and voucher plans as ways of allowing for broader parent choice in the schooling of their children.
