AbstractThe results of two surveys are summarized in this research report. They include: (1) an interview survey of a sample of employers of 100 or more personnel in four of Indiana's Planning and Development Regions, and (2) a questionnaire survey of a sample of companies employing from 50 to 100 personnel. The surveys were conducted in the summer of 1975 with the goal of identifying the views of business and industry in the state concerning the employability of college graduates. The results indicate that: employers in the state are not having difficulty in finding college graduates to fill their available positions; the factors considered of primary importance were not directly related to academic performance but involved communication skills and previous work experience; too many college graduates were basically unfamiliar with the nature of business-industry and the nature of the work to be performed; respondents generally favored hiring graduates with major fields of study closely related to the occupation pursued, especially if he also were strong in communication and human relations skills; many graduates may be forced into positions of underemployment; employers would not recommend underemployment, although a majority seemed to be practicing it.
