| Abstract | Talk, the use of language to accomplish purposes of varying degrees of significance in the child's language development, is a learning activity, guided by a teacher and practiced by the child. The purpose of this book is to show how important this skill, talk, is to the child and to present ways in which teachers can stimulate children's talking skills in the classroom. Topics of chapters are the nature of talk, things people do with talk, things which impinge upon talk, a talk model for the language arts classroom, designing a talk environment, and roles for the language arts teacher to consider.
