| Abstract | The current status of child abuse and neglect research is reviewed from the four traditional perspectives of mental health, medicine, law, and social work. In the field of mental health, research methodology; characteristics of victims, perpetrators, families, and the situation; prediction; long-term effects; and theoretical approaches are covered. The role of both "traditional" and "less traditional" medicine is reviewed, including the role of nursing, physical effects, prevention, developmental effects, and the interface of medicine with other social and cultural issues relating to child abuse and neglect. The legal review covers criminal laws, reporting statutes, neglect statutes, jurisdiction, the relationship of law and other disciplines, and parents' and children's rights. The social work perspective provides a definition of neglect and discusses influences contributory to neglect, early warning signals, and sequelae. Conclusions and recommendations for future research are given for each of the four fields. (Author) |
