Abstract | The purpose of this study was to assess the present state of building systems, to analyze projects currently being developed, and to predict future advances in systems. "Building system" is used to designate a minimum of three major subsystems designed to fit and function together without the necessity of onsite cutting or other extensive adjustments. The school building systems discussed were limited to those that represented advances over previous programs and that dealt with the construction of groups of schools rather than with single buildings. Research studies that involved systems projects were examined, evaluated, and compared. Several outstanding building systems projects that had recently been completed were visited and examined in detail. The opinions of administering authorities were solicited along with the comments of persons responsible for the actual maintenance and operation of these projects. Whenever possible, such opinions were verified or rejected by direct observation of conditions within the schools concerned. (Author/MLF) |
