| Abstract | It is stated in the introduction that growing numbers of educators and researchers are concerned with how students develop values and they are examining strategies for values clarification. This monograph presents historical background and recent trends in value education. It discusses the values clarification approach and the cognitive development approach, considering strategies and criticism for both. The role of the classroom teacher is discussed in relation to (1) accountability, (2) school environment, (3) effect of punishment, (4) the teacher as moral guide, and (5) self knowledge. The monograph contains lists of selected references and additional readings. (RC) |
