Abstract	This document provides comparative information on state legislation concerning (1) the reporting of suspected cases of child abuse and neglect throughout the United States, and (2) the establishment and use of central registries containing reported data. The first section lists for each state: who must and who may make reports of suspected child abuse, what form the report should take, when and to whom it should be made, penalties for failure to report and legal immunities for those who file reports. The second section, which deals with state central registries, lists for each state: whether a central registry is present in the state statute, what parties have access to reports stored in the registry, and penalties for improper use or release of reports.
