| Abstract | A model for identification of hearing impairment which combined tympanometry and the puretone procedures outlined by the American Speech and Hearing Association was tested with 8,528 elementary age children from six Connecticut towns. The nine goals of the project included obtaining pass/fail ratios for puretone audiometry within minus 1 percent and plus 3 percent of national prevalence statistics, obtaining a normative data base for a combined puretone-tympanometry model representative of the various populations within Connecticut, and determining the reduction of false positives resulting from a rescreening of all initial screen failures. All goals were met except the goal of having the model adopted in at least two of the participating towns. It was concluded that routine inclusion of tympanometry in hearing conservation programs for schools is both practicable and desirable, and that nursing and hearing personnel can be taught quickly to operate the equipment and obtain reliable data.
