Abstract | Excessive faculty mobility, from the medical school standpoint, can be interpreted as an undesirable event to the institution. Are there identifiable personal and institutional characteristics that are associated with high employment mobility? A mobility index that shows the relationship between the number of medical school jobs held and the number of years of medical school employment was used to differentiate the the characteristics of faculty at opposite ends of a continuum of mobility. The three mobility categories of faculty were compared on eight variables associated with medical schools. Faculty variables included sex, type of degree, academic rank, nature of employment, support for predoctoral training, areas of responsibility, and country of graduation. Institutional variables were ownership, department type, and geographic location. Findings were: (1) faculty mobility groups did not differ significantly with respect to administrative level or predoctoral support. The highly mobile faculty did not appear to have developed the degree of attachment or commitment to the medical school attained by the highly faculty, were generally found to be in the lower usually untenured ranks, had however responsibilities at the medical school, had professional preparation outside the United States or Canada, and had received less postdoctoral training as a group.
