Abstract | The curriculum report describes the Experience-Based Career Education project (EBCE) that is attempting to foster productive relationships between school and community and to meet the personal and occupational needs of high school students. The four project centers are: Far West School (Oakland, California), the Academy for Career Education (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Appalachia Educational Laboratory (Charleston, West Virginia), and Community Experiences for Career Education (Tigard, Oregon), The programs at the project centers are characterized by: individualized, alternate plans of full-time high school training; reliance on community involvement; work experience for the students; the provision of career information; and the development of entry-level skills. Each program is operated and monitored by Regional Educational Laboratory. Demographic statistics on each site are presented. Although broad guidelines have been developed, each program is free to develop diverse approaches, activities, and local resources. Descriptions of each program cover: the learning resources; curriculum organization (projects); and the specific goals of each. Evaluation focuses on such questions as: the efficacy of orientation sessions; the role of employers; objectives; and student achievement and competencies. (JB) |
