Abstract | The primary purpose of this book is to present what seems to be the best thinking in the field about a variety of topics which concern the teaching of reading at the community/junior college level. Chapter one describes the type of institution the community/junior college has become and the variety of students whose needs it must meet. Chapter two presents a synthesis of the literature available on the reading program and discusses the commonalities and some basic principles for the development and operation of a reading program. Chapter three presents an analysis and outline for a suggested training program for community/junior college reading teachers. Chapter four outlines the available instruments for diagnosis and testing and also discusses and illustrates the use of various types of informal diagnostic tools to tie the reading program to the content area subjects and the classroom teacher. And chapter five discusses the various materials and hardware available to a reading teacher with cautions and recommendations from the literature. (WR) |
