| Abstract | A generalized approach to scoring ordered multicategory items having one or more options in each category is described first, and differential weighting schemes for scoring dichotomous items are considered. Seven scoring formulas, five of which take into account the fact that the number of options keyed as correct may be different for the two response categories in dichotomous items are presented. The results of an experiment involving the seven methods of scoring a 100-item general psychology test as dependent variables are then given. The four independent variables were (P) proportion of total number of items on which option "a" was keyed as correct, (T) whether examinees were told the proportion of "a" options keyed as correct, (G) whether examinees were instructed to guess when in doubt, and (K) two levels of examinee's knowledge of subject-matter of the test (low vs. high).
