AbstractThe American Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (S. 1017) was designed to promote Indian self-determination in two distinct but related areas: (1) Federally-funded Indian services and (2) Indian education. It proposed a vehicle by which Indian people can eventually assume full control over programs and services administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Service. It further provided for increased Indian participation in the planning and conduct of Indian educational programs, and for new programs to upgrade the quality of Indian education. On May 20, 1974, the House Indian Affairs Subcommittee of the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee met to hear testimony on S. 1017 and other related legislation. The testimony consisted of discussions of the legislation and its provisions. Among the witnesses were representatives from the: National Advisory Council on Indian Education; Sinte Gleska Community College; Association on American Indian Affairs; Indian Education Training, Inc., Navajo Nation; Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indians of Alaska; Coalition of Indian Controlled School Boards; and Yakima Tribe.
