Abstract | The currently popular topic of change may be considered from three vantage points in relation to communication and secondary education. First, changes in the discipline of speech communication are seen in the increasing number of high school teachers who teach communication as process by exploring the dimensions of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication. Second, two occurrences in secondary education hold both promise and challenge: the redefinition of educational goals to involve communication skills and the emphasis by many English teachers on communication as the focal point of English language arts study. Third, instructional practices are changing in accountability/systematicity concerning learning goals, in the perception of the student's role in the learning process, and in individualized instruction and student sharing programs.
