AbstractThis paper reviews the literature on the use of dental auxiliaries (hygienists, assistants, and laboratory technicians). The dentist may increase his productivity by employing more auxiliaries and by delegating more tasks to them. Even though state laws and rules are becoming more liberal in allowing the dentist to delegate tasks to his auxiliaries, some restrictions on the use of hygienists and assistants still remain, with more revised laws prohibiting the delegation of restorations. Surveys of dentists have shown that while they appear to be receptive to the use of expanded duty assistants (EDA), they resist any delegation of technical duties because the dentists enjoy performing them. It may be that only when faced with an acute increase in demand for their services that dentists will be willing to increase the quantity of auxiliaries and to delegate more duties to them. This assumes that dentists will not be willing to work substantially greater hours in response to increased demand. Table 1 in the introduction shows that this has been the case in the past. A 44-item bibliography is included. (Author/PG)
