Abstract | This paper reports a study designed as a preliminary effort to learn how chief school officials are evaluated by boards of education and to make recommendations for improving evaluation procedures. The descriptive research reported herein (1) identifies the status of evaluative procedures for chief school administrators in New Jersey, (2) investigates existing practices, (3) determines the extent to which formalized systems of appraisal have begun to evolve, and (4) assesses the desire of school boards to develop such procedures.
